Jasmine Brown rice with five spice braised pork belly

 I came to stay with my sister in UK for 1 month.




 Well, it's so cold, and how lucky am I to get a cold as soon as I arrived here, -*-. So, you can see that I didn't post anything much, because all I wanted to do is stay in bed, sleeping, haha.
Anyway, I felt a lot better now, and it's time for me to cook something that's suitable for this weather. Yes, a bowl full of delicious pork belly is what I want (it's cold so I need fat to warm myself, right?). But only the fat is not a good thing so I serve my five spice braised pork belly with brown jasmine rice that packed with vitamin and fibre, so you can claim that this dish is good for your health, hehe.
Ps. my sister doesn't have electronic rice cooker, but she has a microwave one, so I soak the rice to make it easier to cook in the microwave, and use less water for cooking. The time for cooking the rice may be varies depends on how long you soak the rice and the power of your microwave too. For cooking in an electronic rice cooker without soaking the rice you will need more water.

Jasmine Brown rice with five spice braised pork belly
Serve 4




2 cups (260g) ............................ Jasmine Brown rice 
3 cups ......................................... water (550ml)

Five spice braised pork belly
500 g ......................................... Pork belly, cut into 1 cm pieces
Marinade
- 2 tsp .......................................... Five spice powder 
- 3 tbsp ........................................ Sugar 
- 4 tbsp ........................................ Soy sauce 
- 4 tbsp ........................................ Sake
1 tbsp ........................................... Rice bran oil
1 tbsp ........................................... Garlic, finely chopped
2 tbsp .......................................... Ginger, finely chopped
4 .................................................. Dried shiitake (soaked until soften before using), slice into pieces
85 g ............................................. Leek, finely sliced
2 .................................................. Boiled eggs
500 ml ........................................ Water 





 Jasmine Brown rice
 Put rice in a bowl and pour water into the bowl, mix quickly to remove some extra starch.

  Drain the rice.
Soak the rice in water (about 3 cm above the rice) 
Soak for 1.30-2 hours
 Put the pork belly into a bowl, mix with five spice powder, soy sauce, sugar, and sake.
Let it marinade for 20 minutes.


 Drain the rice.


 Pour into a microwavable bowl, with water.
Cover.
 Microwave at high (800-900W) for 15-20 minutes.


 Place a pan over medium heat, pour rice bran oil into the pan.
Put the pork (without the marinade) into the pan.
Cook until golden brown.


 Put garlic, and ginger into the pan, cook until fragrance.


 Put the shiitake, and leek into  the pan, cook until fragrance.


 Pour the rest of the marinade into the pan with water.


 Put the boiled eggs into the pan.


 Cover and simmering for 20-30 minutes.


Put the cooked rice into a bowl, place braised pork belly, boiled egg and steamed vegetable into the bowl.
Serve warm.

  1. Looks very nice, I did Asian pigs cheeks last week seriously nice. Some of the usual suspects :Ginger, Garlic, star anise, chilli, mirin, honey Soy and Sesame onion and carrot. Cooked slow great results. I had the cold is everywhere, glad its not flu :):) I use Jasmin rice a lot, must go for the brown rice next time .
